We were delighted that the annual Made in Roath arts festival found us a fantastic location in which to work over a number of days in October and November 2015, Rose St Flea Market in Roath, Cardiff.
The project title came from an old gramophone record we found on our first visit.
On talking to proprietor, Frank during that first visit he told us a little about the history of the place and of some strange occurrences he has encountered there…we were pleased to be able to get his recollections on film on a subsequent visit…
We determined to create new work on site rather than bring existing work, and to explore the glassware (as Frank had brought our attention to unusual instances with glass and glassware at Rose Street), perhaps something would manifest in our recordings…we played the record through a small contact speaker placed in different glasses and on glass surfaces to see what might happen…
Thanks to Frank for having us and to the Made in Roath team for supporting the project.
For Made in Roath 2015, Absent but not Forgotten were lucky enough to be able to work with Rose Street Flea Market to install existing work as part of the festival on 11 October and will also be undertaking a mini ‘residency’ in the building on 7 & 8 November.
For 11 October we started to get a feel for the location having met with proprietor, Frank a few times to chat about the flea market and his experiences of being in the building over the last 4 years.
The flea market is an amazing warren of objects collected together by proprietor Frank from a lifetime of magpie finds and house clearance. What appears to be a completely eclectic muddle of things we found to be actually quite carefully thought about and placed. It has the satisfying illusion of chaos which allows the visitor to feel like an explorer discovering everything for the first time.
We wanted our first foray into the building to be unobtrusive. We decided to select a number of framed-up prints from our ‘ghost-in-a-sheet’ series of lo-fi and Polaroid images to place discreetly amongst the existing framed pictures and photographs for visitors to happen upon.
Thanks to Frank for hosting us (and for getting under a sheet for a quick snap!) and to Made in Roath for finding us such a great venue.
Absent but not Forgotten were very pleased to be invited to haunt the recent Made in Roath event, Dark Dark Night Walk on Saturday 18 January, a night-time walk around Roath starting in Roath Park Rec. It was a perfectly cold, crisp evening – we could be spotted at various locations along the route finishing with a re-showing at Spit & Sawdust of our Made in Roath ‘Haunting Places‘ films made in the summer of 2014.
